A better deal for tenants? Recent trends in lease terms

Overview

Once upon a time tenants had little choice in the terms of leases that they were signing up to with pretty much everything weighted in favour of the landlord. Over the last ten years or so there has been a significant shift towards better and more flexible terms for tenants. This has at least in part been fuelled by the voluntary lease code (and the government's threat of legislation) and service charge code encouraging a more balanced relationship between landlord and tenant. However, the trend has accelerated considerably in recent times with new tenants finding themselves able to take full advantage of current market conditions.
