Overview

In December last year, in what appears to be a world first, an Australian judge gave permission for legal papers to be served via the social networking website, Facebook.

With 120 million Facebook users worldwide and more than eight million users in the UK, most of us are at least vaguely familiar with Facebook and the wider social networking phenomenon. Most members of Facebook use it for gossiping and sharing photos, and its application to the legal industry is not immediately apparent. However, an Australian Supreme Court judge in MKM Capital v Corbo and Poyser could have found that legal application – the service of court documents.
