Whistleblower kickback complaint results in £4.8m civil recovery order

Overview

As part of a global settlement with the Johnson & Johnson group, the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has obtained a Civil Recovery Order in the High Court against the UK affiliate, DePuy International Limited (DePuy), requiring DePuy to pay in excess of £4.8m, plus prosecution costs.

The global settlement highlights a growing trend of increased co-operation between US and UK enforcement agencies and increasing use of Civil Recovery Orders by the SFO in this jurisdiction.

The Order brought to an end an SFO investigation into allegations that DePuy had used bribes in order to win contracts to supply orthopaedic products in Greece.
