The state of UK litigation: big ticket suits on the rise

Overview

The UK Ministry of Justice recently published its annual statistics on judicial and court activity during 2009.

Across Britain as a whole, there was a reduction in the number of claims issued in 2009.

However, the position is very different with respect to claims issued in the Royal Courts of Justice which rose by over 15 percent, and there were also substantial increases in the Chancery Division, the Queen’s Bench Division, the Commercial Court and the Technology and Construction Court, suggesting that all types of ‘big ticket’ commercial litigation are increasing.

Macfarlanes has updated its review of litigation in the City of London over the past 10 years to reflect the latest figures.
