A Supreme Court for the United Kingdom

Overview

On 1 October 2009, the UK's new Supreme Court (the "Court") opened for business. In doing so, powers of appeal which have been exercised for the last 600 years by the UK's upper legislative chamber, the House of Lords, have been transferred.

The creation of the Court gives effect to formal separation of powers principles in the UK constitution for the very first time. In the short to medium term, however, it is unlikely that the introduction of the Court will herald radical changes in the way that the UK's laws are developed by the judiciary and/or a new era of activist jurisprudence.
