Overview
The past few months have seen interesting developments in the delivery of broadband in the UK. These centre on the evolution of policy on "superfast broadband" services at speeds in excess of 50 megabits per second (Mbps) by 2017 and, more immediately, the delivery of standard 2Mbps broadband throughout the UK.
Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), the new government body responsible for rolling out next generation broadband across the UK, started work in March. It is tasked with driving forward the Universal Service Commitment set out in the Digital Britain Report to deliver 2Mbps to every household by 2012. It will also manage the spend of the £1bn Next Generation Fund to deliver next generation superfast broadband to 90 per cent of the country by 2017.
