Overview
The Rotterdam Rules, a recent United Nations Convention on the carriage of goods by sea, is as yet unsigned and unenforced by many Arab countries. This briefing examines whether ratifying the convention is unfavourable for Arab countries given the nature of trading activity in the region.
The briefing provides some background to international martime agreements and conflicts of interest for signatory states before detailing a variety of common shipping disputes. Lastly, the various shipping issues associated with the Hamburg Convention and Rotterdam Rules are contrasted.
