Overview
A seismic shake-up of the Internet domain names system in Singapore is underway. On 20 June 2011, the ICANN Board approved a plan to drastically increase the number of generic top level domains (gTLDs) from the current 22. Public and private organisations will soon be able to register any term, in almost any language.
This briefing offers practical advice for Singaporean companies, including:
• Should your company decide to apply for gTLDs now, or wait and see what develops?
• Should your company take advantage of a scheme that prevents the registration of new .xxx domain names that are identical with your company’s trade marks?
• Should your company apply for new Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) that are currently being launched by the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) under Tamil or simplified Chinese script TLDs?
