Protecting reputations: the draft Defamation Bill full report

Overview

The Government's draft Bill proposes reforms of defamation law, notably in effectively removing trial by jury, with its associated high costs, and in providing better protection for publishers by introducing the new single publication rule.


This report by the Joint Committee on the Draft Defamation Bill puts the Government's proposals under the microscope and suggests the following four areas for improvement:



  • freedom of expression/protection of reputation;

  • reducing costs;

  • accessibility;

  • cultural change;
