Proposed mandatory labelling scheme – will there be a knock-on effect on the licensed trade?

Overview

A new report has found that 85 per cent of drinks are still not being labelled properly. The independent report found that consumers are not being given enough information about alcohol units and potential health harms.
A voluntary agreement between the government and the drinks industry was created in 2007. It was agreed that the majority of alcoholic drink labels should include:

- the number of units the drink contain
- daily safe drinking limits
- the website address for the Drinkaware Trust
- a warning to pregnant women
- a message about responsible drinking.

In 2008, only six per cent of labels met the standards. This has risen to 15 per cent, with a projection of 19 per cent for 2010.
