Overview
Under Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources, the Slovak Republic is obliged to increase the share of electricity from renewables to 14% of total energy consumption in 2020. The latest reported share for 2008 was 8.4%.
To comply with this ambitious commitment, the Slovak Parliament has adopted the long-awaited Act No. 309/2009 Coll. on the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources and High Efficiency Cogeneration Production, which came into force as from 1 September 2009.
In December 2010, the Slovak Parliament adopted an Amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Promotion Act, as the state attempts to regulate the construction of photovoltaic and wind energy facilities.
