Data privacy in China - additional online user control and data privacy protections

Overview

As the country with the largest internet population in the world (a recent report indicated that the total number of China's internet users stood at 513 million in 2011), China represents a lucrative market for online advertising, consumer research, and data mining companies seeking to reach out to consumers.


Until recently, the collection of personal information via the internet or online software has been a relatively unregulated area of China's burgeoning IT sector. However, on 15 March 2012, new provisions issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Communications Administration will come into effect.
