Overview

The United Arab Emirates is currently embarking on its first civilian nuclear energy programme. The UAE’s justification for nuclear power is based on its view that alternative and traditional energy sources alone will be insufficient to meet future energy demand. Four nuclear reactors are ear-marked for construction in Braqa, at a site on the western coast of Abu Dhabi, by 2017. In this article, Denton Wilde Sapte discusses the background to the project, the Government’s objectives and the involvement of the United States.
