Mexico sharpens tools to fight competition law violations

Overview

New legislation, which came into force on 11 May this year, sharpens Mexico's tools for investigating and enforcing against competition law violations.

The package of reforms follows a headline-grabbing $1bn fine imposed in April on the country's biggest mobile phone operator, Telcel, for setting interconnection fees in a manner that unfairly displaced competitors.

The new package of laws significantly upgrades competition law in Mexico and sends another clear message that companies doing business in Mexico must take competition law extremely seriously.
