Malaysia unveils new blueprint for a high-value, high-income economy

Overview

On 21 December 2011, the Central Bank of Malaysia released the new Financial Sector Blueprint which supersedes the first Financial Sector Masterplan introduced in 2001. Themed around "Strengthening Our Future", the Blueprint is a 10-year strategic plan that charts the future direction of the financial system as the country transitions towards a high-value and high income economy.

There are nine focus areas and 69 recommendations in total under the Blueprint. This client alert from Baker & McKenzie discusses the key focus areas including:

  • strengthening regional and international financial integration;

  • greater operational flexibility;

  • liberalisation of Foreign Exchange Rules;

  • internationalisation of Islamic Finance; and
