Information Commissioner’s Office issues guidance on 'cookie' use rule change

Overview

Cookies are small text files placed on the hard drives of individuals visiting web sites, and are used by organisations to log details about those individuals. Many cookies are used to enable the smooth operation of web site transactions, or to avoid the need for a user’s information to be re-entered each time a web site is re-visited, and may therefore be considered beneficial.

On 26 May 2011, the rules concerning how we use ‘cookies’ will change and the Information Commissioner’s Office has issued guidance to help organisations using them to prepare for the change.
