India bulletin: piracy and ransom payments, the Middle East and Australia flooding

Overview

In this India bulletin, Holman Fenwick Willan looks how major events around the world have impacted shipping, commodities, insurance, and the related infrastructure:

• Following an appeal by Masefield AG, the Court of Appeal published its judgment in the matter on 26 January 2011. The appellants did not appeal the High Court’s decision that the vessel was not a constructive total loss (CTL) or any issues of fact.
• While the quantities of oil produced by Libya – around 1.6 million barrels of oil per day – are not sufficient to create a supply shortage, the fear is that the unrest might spread to other countries in the Middle East, with a knock on effect on oil prices.
• The recent floods in Australia have caused widespread disruption to large numbers of people and damage to their property, as well as local infrastructure.
