Guernsey's innovative new image rights legislation

Overview

The Guernsey government has recently approved the introduction of specific legislation to allow celebrities and media personalities to register and protect their identity in Guernsey. The proposed legislation will make Guernsey the first jurisdiction in the world to offer a registered image right.

Guernsey registered image rights will be enforceable in Guernsey but will be designed to be fully compatible and integrated with modern media, including broadcasting, satellite transmission, the internet and other electronic communications, to provide protection in the global mass media market.

This briefing from offshore specialists Mourant Ozannes outlines what exactly an image right is, the benefits of registered image rights, who will be able to register and the legislation's implementation timetable.
