Overview
The Government has made a commitment to repeal legislation which restricts the ability of local authorities to sell electricity which has been produced from renewables.
The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 currently gives local authorities power to sell heat but prohibits them from selling electricity which is not produced in association with heat. In a speech yesterday at the annual conference of the Local Government Association, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne said that he wants this legislation to be repealed and that he hopes that by the end of the year local authorities will be able to sell electricity from renewables.
