FSA imposes highest ever fine of £2.275m for loss of data

Overview

The FSA announced on 24 August 2010 that it has imposed a fine of £2.275m on the UK branch of Zurich Insurance arising from the loss of, and lack of control over, personal data of 46,000 of its customers.

This is the highest fine that the FSA has imposed on a single firm for data loss and, save for various mitigating factors, the fine would have been £3.25m.

The final notice issued by the FSA makes salutary reading for every data controller who has appointed third parties or other group companies to process personal data on their behalf, whether or not they are regulated by the FSA.
