General counsel survey 2011 – how the game is changing

Overview

This detailed report is based on a survey of almost 900 private and public sector heads of legal across 10 countries during the first half of 2010. By comparing its findings with the same survey 5 years ago, the results demonstrate how counsels' roles and responsibilities are evolving significantly.

Amongst its findings, the report shows in-house counsel believe they are more in demand (particularly on regulatory compliance and risk); are enjoying greater importance in the eyes of their organisation's senior teams; and are carrying an increasing amount of influence compared with external legal advisers.

Equally, the survey shows a marked trend towards resolving commercial and regulatory disputes via negotiated settlement as well as changes in the counsel are receiving and managing information.
