Overview
This bulletin examines the potential impact on employment law of the election manifestos of the three main UK political parties, which were published this week.
Our recent poll showed the majority of respondents were most concerned about unfair dismissal protection, employment tribunal practice and procedure and retirement age and procedure. Nearly a third of respondents also wished for employment legislation to be simplified.
With the publication this week of the manifestos, we have a clearer insight in to what they propose. What to do about retirement age figures prominently but, while there is plenty of reference to deregulation, in the short term at least there seems little prospect that your wishes for less or simpler employment law will be met.
More "family friendly" measures are promised and, taken together with the new employment law already on its way, such as the Equality Act and additional paternity leave, it seems that, whichever party wins, a simpler employment law life will be some time coming.
