Overview
Mozambique has had one of the fastest growing economies over the past decade, following a series of economic reforms. Endowed with rich, abundant and extensive natural resources, its present day economy is one of huge potential.
The Mozambique government has taken steps to make the country as attractive as possible to foreign direct investment, upon which it is heavily dependent. South Africa is Mozambique’s main trading partner, but Portugal, Belgium and Spain also figure among the country’s most important partners.
Agriculture still contributes 24% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and it is a key sector of growth as the country’s economy is based largely on agriculture. Subsistence agriculture continues to employ the vast majority of the country’s work force. Moreover, the wealth of Mozambican soil and land is allowing the growth of agro-business (namely with the exploration of sugar cane), as well the exploration of land for the production of bio-diesel.
